SOAS Justice for Workers – End Outsourcing (‘J4W’) is a staff-student campaign that was started by outsourced SOAS UNISON cleaning staff members in 2006, to fight for fair conditions for ALL workers at SOAS. The original ‘Justice For Cleaners’ campaign later expanded to include all outsourced staff (those being hired by external private subcontractors). This included the catering, hospitality, porters, helpdesk and reception workers, maintenance, security, and post room workers. It is a worker-centred campaign supported by students and in-house staff. So far it has won the London Living Wage, sick pay, holiday pay, and pensions. Most recently, following solidarity actions by students potential industrial action by staff, and growing protests, SOAS senior management where forced to concede to the demand for all outsourced workers to be brought in-house. Outsourced staff became full SOAS employees on 29th August 2018.
The Justice for Workers campaign now focuses on ensuring School management keeps to their promises made to workers, as well as expanding the campaign against privatisation and outsourcing beyond the School.
