Both the SOAS UCU and SOAS UNISON branches are currently balloting for industrial action over this year’s pay offer — and we’re holding a joint branch meeting to discuss why it’s vital that we all vote YES to take action for fair pay and conditions.

Why we are balloting
This year, university employers have offered a 1.4% pay lift— the lowest in the public sector and well below inflation. This is a pay cut in real terms. After years of below-inflation settlements, staff pay in higher education has fallen by around 30% in real terms since 2009.
Meanwhile, the cost of living in London continues to rise, workloads are increasing, and recruitment and retention pressures are growing across our university. Staff are being asked to do more for less.
Both UCU and UNISON have rejected the current offer, and members are being asked to vote for industrial action to secure a fair, sustainable pay deal that reflects the real value of our work and the pressures we face.
About the meeting
This joint meeting will:
Provide an update on the national campaignand the ballot timelines
Explain why your vote matters— and why every single ballot return counts
Offer space for questions and discussion
Outline how you can get involvedin campaigning locally
All members and potential members are invited to attend. A strong turnout will help us send a clear message that SOAS staff stand together for fair pay and conditions.

¿Por qué estamos votando?
Este año, las empresas universitarias han ofrecido un aumento salarial del 1,4%: el más bajo del sector público y muy por debajo de la inflación. Se trata de una reducción salarial en términos reales. Tras años de acuerdos por debajo de la inflación, el salario del personal de la educación superior ha caído alrededor de un 30% en términos reales desde 2009.
Mientras tanto, el coste de la vida en Londres sigue subiendo, la carga de trabajo aumenta y la presión para contratar y retener personal crece en toda nuestra universidad. Se le pide al personal que haga más por menos.
Tanto UCU como UNISON han rechazado la oferta actual y se les pide a los miembros que voten a favor de una acción industrial para garantizar un acuerdo salarial justo y sostenible que refleje el valor real de nuestro trabajo y las presiones que enfrentamos.
Sobre la reunión
Esta reunión conjunta tendrá como objetivo:
Proporcionar una actualización sobre la campaña nacional y los plazos de votación.
Explicar por qué su voto es importante y por qué cada voto devuelto cuenta.
Ofrecer espacio para preguntas y debate.
Describir cómo puede participar en la campaña a nivel local.
Todos los miembros y posibles miembros están invitados a asistir. Una asistencia nutrida nos ayudará a transmitir el mensaje claro de que el personal de SOAS se une para lograr salarios y condiciones laborales justos.
