Health and safety

SOAS UNISON believes health and safety in the workplace is an issue for everyone. Every year, thousands of people suffer accidents and ill-health at work across the country – most of which could be avoided. Trade unions and health and safety laws save and protect lives. But many more workers could be protected from harm if health and safety laws were better enforced. Your branch is campaigning for a new way of working, one that guarantees every worker at SOAS a safe and healthy workplace.

In your branch your Health and Safety Stewards are proactively looking for improvements in the working environments for SOAS staff. If you feel that your working environment gives you cause for concern in any way please contact your workplace Health & Safety Steward. Your stewards can provide help and advice as well as carry out workplace inspections, ensuring School management meets all its obligations under the law.

We would love to have a Health & Safety Steward or contact in each department and extra support is always helpful. If you would like to get involved – free training and time off for your duties are provided – please get in touch.

International Workers Memorial Day

Each year on the 28th of April our branch celebrates International Workers Memorial Day where we remember the dead and fight for the living. We reaffirm our commitment to health and safety in the workplace, and the importance of well trained union stewards who make a real difference to workers’ lives every day.
