What is the election about?
Every 5 years an election for the General Secretary of UNISON is held. This year two candidates are running, and the ballot opens on the28th October 2025.
The General Secretary (a paid full-time role) is the highest elected individual in the union, and is hugely influential on the direction of the union and the strength given to our voices.
Who can vote?
All members have a vote including retired members. The branch exec met to discuss the candidates and our experience being active in UNISON, and decide whether to make a branch nomination.
Who did SOAS UNISON nominate?
SOAS UNISON backs Andrea Egan for General Secretary.
We believe Andrea:
Has a clear plan for successful action on Pay, which for HE has been too-long neglected at the top level in UNISON.
Will take the wage of a social worker, not the £181,000 package our current GS receives. Andrea’s pay will increase when yours does.
Opposes UNISON’s subservience to Starmer’s Labour, putting UNISON members first, not the Labour Party.
Will resource branches to be better supported, giving you access to legal advice when needed.
Has shown genuine commitment to HE on funding and pay.

¿De qué tratan las elecciones?
Cada 5 años se celebran las elecciones para el Secretario General de UNISON. Este año se presentan dos candidatos y la votación se abre el 28 de octubre de 2025.
El Secretario General (cargo remunerado a tiempo completo) es la persona electa de mayor rango en el sindicato y tiene una gran influencia en la dirección del sindicato y en la fuerza que se da a nuestras voces.
¿Quién puede votar?
Todos los miembros tienen derecho a voto, incluidos los jubilados. La junta directiva de la sección se reunió para hablar sobre los candidatos y nuestra experiencia activa en UNISON, y para decidir si se presenta una nominación de la sección.
¿A quién nominó SOAS UNISON?
SOAS UNISON apoya a Andrea Egan como Secretaria General.
Creemos que Andrea:
Tiene un plan claro para una acción exitosa en materia salarial, que en el ámbito de la educación superior se ha descuidado durante demasiado tiempo en las altas esferas de UNISON.
Aceptará el salario de una trabajadora social, no el paquete de 181.000 libras que recibe nuestro actual GS. (El salario de Andrea aumentará cuando el tuyo aumente).
Se opone a la sumisión de UNISON al Partido Laborista de Starmer, priorizando a los miembros de UNISON, no al Partido Laborista.
Dotará de recursos a las delegaciones para que reciban un mejor apoyo, brindándoles acceso a asesoramiento legal cuando lo necesiten.
Ha demostrado un compromiso genuino con la educación superior en materia de financiación y remuneración.
