The NEC (National Executive Committee) is the highest level of elected committee in UNISON, and the people elected play a crucial role in shaping and directing the union. These elections happen every two years, so we encourage all members to use all the votes you have.
All UNISON members (who joined pre-21 January 2025), can expect a ballot to come to their registered home address. Check UNISON has your correct address by logging in to My UNISON (My UNISON | UNISON National). If you don’t get voting papers see the link at the end for how you can get help.
Expect to receive in the post a ballot paper, a booklet of statements from all candidates and a pre-paid envelope to return your ballot.
Who can SOAS UNISON members can vote for?
The voting papers you get will cover all the seats you are eligible to vote for. These will be:
regional Greater London seats;
national Black Members and Disabled Member seats, (all members can vote for these), and
nationalHE Service Group seats.
Members under 30 years old also have a vote in the:
national Young Member seats.
Who is SOAS UNISON branch exec backing?
The exec met in February to discuss the nomination requests we received. We agreed to nominate a set of candidates we believe represent progressive change in UNISON, who have shown their commitment to building a fighting union. We believe that these candidates will continue to see through the kind of changes we need in UNISON and will deliver on their promises.
UNISON must be a member-led union – this means that elected members should run our union, not appointed full-time officials. Elected members must be the real leaders.
We need to be an organising, not a servicing, union – we cannot solve all problems on a one-by-one basis. Members will always need individual support, but we need a focus on collective action.
The pay crisis – UNISON must end the scourge of low pay. We need to deliver on national pay negotiations. HE faces a funding crisis and so does the wider public sector. We need new approaches to pay negotiations.
UNISON should play a positive but challenging role with the Labour Government. We should promote UNISON policy on public services and not accept austerity as inevitable from any government.
We must review UNISON’s main legal services contract and particularly the difficulties branches have accessing timely employment law advice.

Return the ballot using the pre-paid envelop as soon as possible. The deadline for receipt of ballots is 12 noon on the 21st May so allow time for delays in the postal service.

¿Por quién pueden votar los miembros de SOAS UNISON?

¿A quién respalda la dirección de la sucursal SOAS UNISON?
El comité ejecutivo se reunió en febrero para analizar las solicitudes de nominación recibidas. Acordamos nominar a un grupo de candidatos que, en nuestra opinión, representan un cambio progresista en UNISON y que han demostrado su compromiso con la construcción de un sindicato combativo. Creemos que estos candidatos seguirán impulsando los cambios que necesitamos en UNISON y cumplirán sus promesas.
UNISON debe ser un sindicato dirigido por sus afiliados; esto significa que los afiliados electos deben dirigir nuestro sindicato, no los funcionarios designados a tiempo completo. Los afiliados electos deben ser los verdaderos líderes.
Necesitamos ser un sindicato organizador, no un servicio pasivo. No podemos resolver todos los problemas individualmente. Los afiliados siempre necesitarán apoyo individual, pero debemos centrarnos en la acción colectiva.
La crisis salarial: UNISON debe acabar con el flagelo de los bajos salarios. Necesitamos cumplir con las negociaciones salariales nacionales. La educación superior se enfrenta a una crisis de financiación, al igual que el sector público en general. Necesitamos nuevos enfoques para las negociaciones salariales.
UNISON debería desempeñar un papel positivo, pero estimulante, con el Labour Party. Debemos promover la política de UNISON en materia de servicios públicos y no aceptar la austeridad como algo inevitable en cualquier gobierno.
Debemos revisar el contrato de servicios jurídicos de UNISON, en particular las dificultades que tienen las filiales para obtener asesoramiento oportuno en materia de derecho laboral.
