One Professional Service Restructure: Consultative Ballot on Industrial Action Now Open

16 January 2019

SOAS UNISON One Professional Service: Consultative Ballot on industrial action is now open. The email ballot will run from Tuesday 16 January to Friday 8 February 2019. The SOAS UNISON Branch Executive recommendation is that you vote YES in this consultative ballot to take strike action in the event that there are compulsory redundancies during the One Professional Service restructure.

Following the motion passed at our Emergency Branch Meeting held on 12 December 2018, the SOAS UNISON Branch Executive were mandated to request that SOAS make a binding commitment that there will be no compulsory redundancies as a consequence of the One Professional Service restructuring.

Unfortunately SOAS would only state that they had “no plans for compulsory redundancies” which clearly falls short of the binding commitment we had requested.

Again in line with the motion passed, SOAS UNISON is therefore launching a consultative ballot to determine if members are willing to take industrial action in the eventuality there are compulsory redundancies as a result of the One Professional Service restructuring programme.

Please vote by emailing YES or NO in response to the following question to unison@soas.ac.uk. The ballot will close at 5pm on Friday, 8th February 2019.

“In the event that there are compulsory redundancies as a result of the One Professional Service restructuring programme, would you be prepared to take industrial action in the form of strike action?”

The SOAS UNISON Branch Executive recommendation is that you vote YES in this consultative ballot to take strike action in the event that there are compulsory redundancies.

If the consultative ballot shows that there is sufficient support for industrial action then the SOAS UNISON Branch Executive will ask UNISON that we be formally balloted for strike action if compulsory redundancies appear to be imminent.

Please get in touch with Sandy Nicoll, SOAS UNISON Branch Secretary or your local workplace rep if you require any additional information.
